We are part of the Me Too! Scheme in Thirsk. Children may use their vouchers for the workshops.

Relic - Guardins of the Museum  

During school half terms and summer holidays we offer drop-in sessions and workshops.

Children on Car

For Primary and Secondary Schools we offer hands-on facilitated workshops. The sessions are designed to meet the National Curriculum standards and cover areas such as Citizenship, History, Literacy, and Art.


Talks for Further / Higher Education groups can be arranged depending on the subject content and notice given.

We can also organise a visit to your school or community group for a workshop outside the museum.

We will soon be launching a Loan Box Service for schools.

During a school visit, pupils accompanied by their teachers, will spend half their time exploring the centre and the other half taking part in a facilitated session.

Primary Schools Programme

Early Years Foundation Stage
Animal Antics
This interactive session full of stories, songs and rhymes explores animals and introduces children to the people who care for them. Children will craft an animal mask to take home.

 

Key Stage 1
Home sweet Home
Visit the 1940s Skeldale House and travel back in time. Experience living in another time period and discover the differences and similarities to our home life today. Explore the centre and take part in an object handling session. Afterwards, pupils will craft a toy from past times to take home.

Animals and us
Focusing on pets and their care, the group will explore the responsibility that we as humans have in ensuring the well-being of animals and the role that vets and animal welfare organisations play in their care. This is a hands-on workshop with the chance to explore items from our veterinary science collection.

Illustration
Explore the history and techniques of illustration and take up the chance to see some of the real illustrations of the James Herriot's children books. Be inspired by our collection and create your own illustration to take home.

Wartime Britain
Experience a visit to our replica air-raid shelter and explore what life was like for children growing up in World War II. This interactive workshop allows you to listen to sounds and handle artefacts from this period of time.

This workshop will reveal the real James Herriot and his books. Search the museum for facts on James Herriot and how he turned his experiences into fiction. Learn more on the techniques of story writing and how you can turn your experiences into a thrilling story.
