School Programme 2008

During your visit to The World of James Herriot, pupils, accompanied by their teachers, will spend half their time exploring the centre and the other half taking part in a facilitated session. When booking your visit, please specify the session you wish to book your group into.

Key Stage 1

Toys through Time

Exploring toys and games, pupils will take a look at how children used to entertain themselves in the 1940s compared to the modern day. Children will be given the opportunity to handle toys and take part in games from times gone by allowing them to gain valuable experience of what homes were like for children in the past.

Learning Themes:

History: How are our toys different from those in the past? and What were homes like a long time ago?

Animals and us (WAGG sponsored)

Looking at a range of animals, we will discuss their needs to ensure they are kept healthy and happy. Focusing on pets and their care, the group will explore the responsibility that we as humans have in ensuring the well-being of animals and the roles of vets and animal welfare organisations in the care of animals.

Learning Themes:

Science: Health and growth, Plants and animals in the local environment, Variation and Ourselves.
Citizenship: Animals and us

Key Stage 2

Wartime Britain

In this session, pupils will be able to explore our replica air raid shelter and experience what life was really like for children growing up in World War II. An interactive workshop which allows the group to explore sounds and handle items from this period in history. Discover what it was like to be an evacuee and the effects rationing had on their lives.

Learning Themes:

History: What was it like for children in the Second World War? and What was it like to live here in the past?

Fact to Fiction

Explore the World of James Herriot and discover what inspired Author Alf Wight to write his stories. Students will be asked to collect factual information from the museum and look at experiences from their own lives to gather story elements, including setting, characters, and events, to help them build a story. This fun interactive session involves students taking part in hot seating and story-building games to encourage story creation.
